Eden Grove AiR was an artist residency created by curator, Jessie Demers and myself as part of the overall movement advocating for the last of the ancient temperate rainforests on Vancouver Island. My residency began in March 2021 and continued until June 21. Each of these large 6x5 foot tree portraits was an adventure, driving my old van up the logging roads and camping out for up to two weeks per painting. During this time, I would carry the canvas into the forest and work from observation throughout the day in the midst of encounters with wildlife (including humans), insects, hail and rain and with the changing light over the hours and days.
